How to Move a Button for a Better Fit

If you want to get more use out of your clothes, especially for growing kids, moving a button is a quick and simple solution! Instead of making a trip to the alterations shop, you can do it yourself in just a few minutes using a few household items.

What You’ll Need

Before getting started, gather these supplies:

  • Something to mark with (chalk or a fabric pen works well)

  • Small scissors

  • Seam ripper

  • Needle and thread

  • Tape measure

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Remove the Old Button

If the button hasn’t already fallen off, use a seam ripper to remove it. Gently slide the ripper under the threads and cut through them, then pull the button free and remove any leftover thread.

2. Mark the New Placement

Decide where the new button should go. In this case, moving the button down just one inch can extend the wear time of a garment by several months, especially for children’s clothing! Mark the new location with your fabric marker.

3. Sew the Button in Place

  1. Thread your needle and knot the end.
  2. Bring the needle up from the back of your marked spot.
  3. Thread it through one hole of the button, then down through the opposite hole, securing it to the fabric.
  4. Repeat this process, going up and down through the button and fabric at least six to eight times for durability.

4. Secure the Stitching

Once the button is firmly attached, flip the fabric over to the backside. Slide the needle under the loops of thread, leaving a small loop. Then, pass the needle through that loop twice before pulling it tight. This creates a secure knot.

5. Enjoy the Perfect Fit!

And that’s it! Your button is now securely in place, and you’ve extended the life of your garment without spending extra money on alterations.

This simple fix is a great way to get the most value out of your clothing purchases. Plus, once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to move buttons faster than you could even load up the kids for a trip to the tailor!
